JRS (2004-2013)

Journal of Refugee Studies

Introduction:

The information listed here was collected for a study I undertook to determine the extent to which authors of articles published in the Journal of Refugee Studies (JRS) from 2004-2013 have deposited eprints of their articles in institutional or other kinds of repositories.  In 2010, when I conducted the original study, covering articles published between 2005 and 2009, I only located one eprint (a preprint deposited in SSRN)!  Now that more time has passed, and more information is available about Open Access, I decided to repeat the study to see if JRS authors are depositing their articles at greater rates.  Searches for this study were conducted over a six-month period between Nov. 2014 and April 2015.

I wanted to share some of the results, but before proceeding, visitors may wish to familiarize themselves with the various Open Access concepts introduced in my OA blog, particularly the first two posts.

Also, for reference, Oxford Journals' self-archiving policy for JRS is available here.  In essence, it allows for authors to deposit both preprints and postprints, although an embargo period of 24 months is imposed on the latter.  It also prohibits the deposit of the publisher's PDF version of the article (the "version of record").  Therefore, even though I came across a number of openly available publisher PDFs while conducting my searches, I do not include links to any below.

Some overall data:
- time period analyzed = articles in volumes published from 2004-2013
- total number of articles (i.e., editorial introductions, research articles, field reports, research notes, refugee voices) = 266
- total number of authors = 412
- author affiliations = 347 academic, 72 other (this figure is higher than the total number of authors since some authors had multiple affiliations)

Some of the findings include:
- total number of JRS articles for which eprints were located = 22
- total number of eprints located = 8 preprints, 20 postprints (some articles had eprints deposited in multiple places, hence the higher number)
- location breakdown of eprints = 14 via institutional repositories (IRs); 9 via Academia.edu/ResearchGate; 3 via subject repositories; 2 via personal websites
- total number of records in digital repositories (excl. those records indicated above with eprints attached) = 109 (for 86 articles)

On the plus side, the number of eprints that have been made available online has certainly increased. That said, the articles for which eprints were identified represent only around 8% of all JRS articles published during a 10-year period (or 22 out of 266).

There has also been a significant increase in records posted in digital repositories.  The first study located a total of 20 records, with 19 housed in IRs, and 1 in SSRN.  This time, 110 records were identified, 109 of which were in IRs, and 1 in SSRN. These records represented 87 articles, or around 32% of all articles.  While most are bibliographic and simply describe the JRS article, 16 indicate that the full-text is available but restricted.  This is most likely because the full-text is not an eprint but rather the final publisher PDF, and the IR limits access in accordance with the journal publisher's self-archiving policy.

These findings are listed below, in reverse chronological order, by individual JRS journal issue. Eprints are highlighted, when available.
