Non-OA Journals

This table (updated Oct. 2025) provides information about the green and hybrid open access policies for traditionally published, subscription-based forced migration-related journals. The hyperlinks lead to 1) the journal homepage; 2) the publisher's self-archiving policy; and 3) more details about a publisher's hybrid OA option. As the table indicates, most publishers allow a postprint version of an article to be deposited online (check the fine print for where), although usually after an embargo period has passed. This can range anywhere from 6 months to two years. However, eight of the journals have no embargo periods at all for depositing postprints in repositories, while another seven permit a postprint to be made available immediately on an author's personal web page. The table also shows that most publishers offer a hybrid option for their journals, with APCs ranging from US$2500 to US$5399. Note that OUP is now quoting APCs for its four titles in either GBP or EUR; conversions to US$ (done on 15 October 2025) are indicated below for comparative purposes. Six titles surpass $4000, with the Journal of Refugee Studies topping the list with an APC of $5399.

*Follow links for fine print. Policies often stipulate where postprints can or cannot be deposited and embargo periods may be different if articles result from funder-mandated research.
**These titles are a combination bronze & hybrid open access; articles in the IRRC and JMHS are free to read, but authors can also choose a hybrid option that provides more reuse rights. See the OA Journals table for more info.
+These titles have announced that all articles published in 2025 will be open access. If this continues to be the case in subsequent years, they will be shifted over to the OA Journals table!
